We’re proud to announce that we have won the Better Business Bureau 2010 Gold Star Award! We received the award last night at the annual awards ceremony. To win the Gold Star award, a business must have zero complaints in the past three years of business. In fact, we have won this award every years since 2003, which means that we have had zero complaints in more than a decade! This honor publicly confirms what we have privately known for a long time: our Colorado-licensed plumbers and HVAC technicians are true experts in their field and passionate about taking care of our clients. We’d like to thank all our hard-working employees and our loyal customers for helping us to achieve this great honor. We truly could not have done it without you!

Colorado-licensed Denver plumbersEvery man when young looks forward to achieving something with his life. For some men it’s starting a business, finishing college in some chosen field of study, or traveling to a far country to learn about and experience the world. Yet others long for a different kind of life, one built by a vocation — a calling, as it were — something that will allow them to start a family, and develop those relationships with the people who are closest to them. All along the way since he was in his twenties back in Cheyenne, Wyoming, Michael Teague wanted to start a family, alongside achieving specific, satisfactory goals that he set for himself. “Since graduation from high school I had always worked around water: sprinklers, swimming pools, an apprenticeship in plumbing”, he starts. “One of the things I’ve always known in my life was that I wanted to be a plumber.”

Training a new plumber is hard enough, but finding one who is already skilled and well-seasoned to add to your company team is a tough challenge. When he applied for a plumbing position with Chaput Rootmaster two years ago, he was looking for a place to grow for the long-term. He knew Chaput had a successful history as a licensed Denver plumbing company, and more importantly was a small company that could focus their business on customer satisfaction, one of Michael’s deeply held core values. “There is a certain kind of pleasure you get from that instant gratification of seeing the customer satisfied,” he says. Yet coming into his own with this reputable company was not without its challenges.

Although Chaput knew they were getting a rare but sharp needle in a haystack, he had to work through a few tough jobs. One in particular he recalls gave him a run for his money. “When I first started working on boilers, it was…uh, exciting”, he says as he smiles facetiously.

“I remember this one time when I burned my first transformer on a boiler. Somehow I wired a zone valve incorrectly and it burned out the transformer. This, of course, set the transformer on fire. Not good. So then I rewired it again and turned it back, after which it worked perfectly! The customer was satisfied with the end result, AND I was satisfied because I had fixed an especially difficult problem on my own, and consequently learned a new and valuable skill that I have since used to this day.”

Not only have they allowed him to become an even better plumbing technician than he was before, Chaput Rootmaster has provided the opportunity for him to continue fulfilling his vocation so that he can spend time more valuable time with his family. “I can tell you that being a plumber and having a family can be tough to juggle at times,” he says. “Things get busy, and there is more to do than you can imagine, but the rewards of a busy life are truly the satisfaction that comes from reaching the goals you set for yourself. I love being a plumber.” The end result of that, he says, is spending time with his precious family. “I can’t wait for the summertime, when I get to watch my son start the track season”, he says enthusiastically. “And when I get a chance to play baseball, tennis, go hiking….all with family of course.”

When is he most happy on the job? “When I’m working — taking care of the customer,” he says with glowing pride. Where would he be if he wasn’t working for Chaput Rootmaster? “Well, I’d still be in plumbing, but from another employer I probably wouldn’t have gotten the attention and opportunity I needed to become so much more excellent at what I do.”

John Paul Getty, the first billionaire in the United States, once said, “One man working with you is worth a dozen working for you,” and thanks to Chaput Rootmaster, Michael has a chance to become that kind of contribution.

mike-wilsonAll of us, when young, dream of doing something with our lives. Whether it’s becoming president, performing as an artist of some kind, or breaking out into the business world, we all envision ourselves doing something that, at the time, looks like something we would enjoy. When Mike Wilson decided to break out of his october sky and leave a small town outside of Houston to become a marine, he had no idea of the changes and turns that would lead him to the work he now enjoys today.

“I was tired of the small town life, and didn’t want to be stuck in the timber business all my life,” he begins. Whereas some join the marines simply as a chance to serve their country and see some action if possible, Mike wanted more: to become an air traffic controller. However, while there, he acquired a secondary occupational specialty for HVAC systems, even attending school at night, and by the time his service was coming to an end in 1987, the long hours and highly complex stresses of keeping planes safe and on schedule began to weigh on him. “By that time, I knew that if I wanted to keep my sanity intact, I was going to have to get away from controlling aircraft”. And so began his flight plan.
His technical skills in cooling system repair and heating system repair provided for a job opportunity in Southern California, managing 75 accounts ranging from the San Diego Zoo to wine companies. From there to working on Navy hovercraft at the base where he was formerly stationed, to service management and leadership in sales training to new technicians, some secondary education in marketing became necessary. The marketing degree he subsequently obtained provided for the foreseeable opportunities on the horizon.

As luck would have it, A company in Houston calls on him to manage them for one year, but the “torrential rainfall and swarming mosquitoes” gave him a mind to return to an HVAC and plumbing service company in California. The California market turned fickle, and as a VP servicing Silicone Valley, in 2002 he decided to try his hand at a service company in Fort Collins, who at the time needed a Division Manager.

Eight years later, having heard somewhere of the name Chaput Rootmaster, he had been looking to relocate to Denver. “I had heard of Chaput, and was on a HVAC website looking for a new opportunity. I wanted something where I could sell and satisfy the customer, but also a chance to train and teach the next generation of servicemen.” In the fall of 2010, he finally touched down in Denver.

Chaput has given him the freedom to use all of his sales experience to implement new changes in a new business environment, remain engaged in a customer-focused sales process, and teach and train the next generation of servicemen. “This service market is changing constantly, and what worked perfectly even 10 short years ago can be outdated and non-productive today,” he instructs like a classroom professor. What’s his favorite part of the job? “Increasing revenue while bringing value to customers. Makes for a win-win.”

From felling trees in a small town, to manning trenches in battles halfway across the world. From the heat and humidity of Houston, to the beautiful wilderness of Denver’s front range. From an unstable, fluctuating market ten years ago, to sustained growth with a company he loves today. “Had I not gotten the opportunity to work at Chaput Rootmaster”, he says, “I would’ve had to either move out of Colorado, or take a position with a lesser employer. Either way, I would have had to leave who I am behind.” For Mike Wilson, finding the finest plumbing and heating services company to work for, was worth all the work to get there.

denver-thermosiphon-solar-water-heaterColorado is known for its sunny weather, and now is the best time to put that sunlight to good use. Energy costs fluctuate constantly, while sunlight will always remain free, making solar water heating an excellent economic choice.

There are two types of solar water heaters: active and passive. Both rely on the sun to heat the water in your home, but what distinguishes the two is how the water is moved toward the sunlight. Active systems rely on a pump to manually move the water to the roof or solar collector, whereas a passive system does not. In this article we will be discussing passive solar water heaters. All Solar water heaters have two basic parts. These parts include an insulated storage tank and a solar collector. A solar collector is the unit where the water is moved to and heated by the sun. Solar collectors come in several varieties; however they all absorb the energy from sunlight and transfer that energy to the water or another heating medium. After the water is heated, it must be stored until it is used. An insulated storage tank is most commonly used. This tank closely resembles a tank type water heater, and performs many of the same functions.

Passive solar water heaters are slightly less efficient than the average active solar water heater. However, what a passive solar heating system lacks in efficiency it makes up for it in reliability and long life. Passive heaters are typically less costly than an active system as well.

Passive solar water heaters come in two varieties: integral collector storage (ICS), and thermosiphon (sometimes spelled “thermosyphon”) systems.

Integral collector storage systems keep the water storage tank located below the solar collector. Cold water flows into the solar collector, where it is heated by the sun, then drawn down into the storage tank below. Integral collector systems work best in areas where the outside temperature rarely falls below freezing. They are also best suited for households with daytime and evening hot water use.

The second type of passive solar water heater is the thermosiphon type. In contrast to integral collector storage systems, thermosiphon systems keep the storage tank located above the solar collector. How does this type work? The answer is due to the fact that cold water sinks and hot water rises. When the water is heated, it will move upward, into the tank, while the cold water will leave the bottom of the tank where it is heated by the solar collector below. This method moves the hot water into the tank and the cold water out without using a pump.

With every solar water heater, a backup heater is needed for very cloudy days or days when a large amount of water is required. This is most commonly done by a tank type water heater, but could also be done with a more efficient tankless water heater.

denver-faucet-fix-repair-installationRunning a restaurant is no walk in the park. There are hard-to-please customers, unforgiving owners, lousy cooks at times, and on some days, long hours with few tips for those you oversee. The competition is fierce, the margin for error narrow, and the rewards can be sorely disappointing.

Late one night coming home from a shift, having had enough, he resumed dreaming about what he really wanted to do. “I’ve gotta get out of this, and somehow work with my hands, making a marked difference in people’s day, and lives.” Pulling into the driveway, he made a decision. Soon, Matt Glick would enter into the work he’d envisioned, the very thing that caught his particular interest, the role he longed to play: that of all things, a plumber.

“I wanted to get out of restaurant management, so I answered an ad for a plumbers apprenticeship”, he sighed, not knowing much about the company or the plumbing industry. Though he was mechanically inclined since youth, finding the right kind of engineering fit was a journey, something he had to discover over time. “As the apprenticeship progressed, I discovered that me and plumbing ‘clicked’ “, Matt said, and out of that experience, realized his dream of becoming a licensed master plumber.

The track record of expert workmanship, quality training for its plumbers, and relentless dedication to truly serving and taking care of the customer, was exactly what impressed Matt upon joining their team in 2010, and continues to be the hallmarks of Chaput Rootmaster. Family owned since 1945, and recognized within the last decade for their record period of no complaints, they take pride in every aspect of their business. Technicians wear shoe covers every time, always use drop cloths, and intentionally finish their work with cleanliness. Accurate and precise pricing is accomplished before any work begins, and all the technicians are certified before taking on jobs.

Every plumbing project requires a different set of problem-solving skills, some being fixed with only the turn of a wrench, others with the collective plumbing heads all coming together when facing more complex projects. But there are times when a plumber is on his own, and has to brave the elements in a tough situation. “Probably my most memorable and challenging job was this one I did during the wintertime”, Matt began. “I was working at an apartment complex, at a time when the temperature was below freezing for weeks. Working in a three-story skeleton of a building proved to be quite difficult.”

Braving those tough times provided the right environment for him to thrive. Many people have had that boss that doesn’t care, the training that just wasn’t enough, or the one pipe that wasn’t screwed on tight enough. Just as Matt knows what it means to be with the right plumbing company that fits him perfectly, Chaput knows what it takes to do the job right and make great plumbers in the process. “Simply, they care. They care about the client,….the employee….and the job being done right. That’s the reason I’ve stayed.” And to top it all off, the respect and deference swings both ways: “There is ongoing training, both technical and customer-based, and support from the owners in everything I do.” Plumbing that works is the one thing you’ll never need until you don’t have it, and you can count on Chaput to make both its customers and employees satisfied. And that satisfaction often comes with a challenge, Matt says.

“I’m most happy when the answer is not immediately apparent. I may have to think deeper or try to look at something in a way that I haven’t looked at it before. Even if I have to ask for help, I will, because at the very least, I will learn.”
